WAEC Maths: the topics worth mastering first
WAEC Maths covers a wide syllabus, but some topics carry more weight. Secure number, algebra and geometry first, then practise full past papers under time.
WAEC Mathematics has a wide syllabus, which is exactly why a plan matters. You can't give every topic equal time, so the smart move is to secure the high-value, reliably-tested areas first and build out from there.
Lock down number and algebra
These underpin the whole paper. Fractions, percentages, ratio, indices, surds, and solving equations turn up everywhere — directly and inside other questions. If these are automatic, large parts of the exam become straightforward. If they're shaky, fix them before anything else.
Get comfortable with geometry and mensuration
Angles, triangles, circles, areas, and volumes are heavily tested and very practisable. The key habit is drawing a clear, labelled diagram for every question — half the work is seeing the problem properly. Mensuration in particular rewards knowing your formulae cold.
Don't neglect statistics and the theory paper
Mean, median, mode, bar charts, pie charts, and frequency tables are approachable marks. And remember WAEC has both objective and theory papers — the theory paper rewards showing clear, step-by-step working, because you earn method marks even when the final answer slips.
Practise full past papers under time
Topic practice builds skill; full timed papers build exam fitness. Sit complete past papers under realistic conditions so you learn to manage time across both papers and spot which topics still cost you marks.
