IELTS at home: how to prepare for each section
IELTS tests listening, reading, writing and speaking. Here's how to prepare for each band at home, practise under timed conditions, and speak with confidence.

IELTS opens doors for study, work, and migration abroad, and you can prepare well from home with the right structure. The test has four sections, and each rewards a slightly different approach.
Listening
You'll hear recordings once and answer as you go, so the skill is staying focused and catching specific details — names, numbers, dates. Practise with a range of English accents, and train yourself to read the questions ahead so you know what to listen for. Spelling counts, so write carefully.
Reading
The reading section is dense and tightly timed. The trick isn't reading every word slowly — it's skimming for structure, then scanning for the specific information each question needs. Practise under time from the start so the clock never surprises you on the day.
Writing
Writing has two tasks, and both reward clear structure and a good range of accurate English. Learn what each task actually asks for, plan before you write, and get your practice essays marked — feedback is where the band improves fastest. Vague, unstructured answers lose marks even when the English is decent.
Speaking
Speaking is a conversation with an examiner, and fluency matters more than perfection. The best preparation is simply speaking English regularly and out loud — describing your day, giving opinions, telling stories. Practising with a partner who can prompt you and give feedback builds real confidence.
Practise speaking with a chum
Speaking is the section students most neglect because it's hard to practise alone. Browse IELTS and language chums and book a free meet & greet to rehearse the speaking test and get your writing reviewed. Steady, structured practice is what turns IELTS from daunting into doable.
