JAMB CBT tips: handling the computer-based test
JAMB is computer-based, and the format trips up well-prepared students. Practise on a real CBT interface, manage your time, and walk in calm and ready.

You can know your subjects well and still lose marks to the format of JAMB. The exam is computer-based (CBT), timed, and structured in a specific way. The good news: the format is completely learnable before you ever sit down.
Practise on a real CBT interface
Reading questions on paper and clicking through them on screen are different experiences. Before exam day, practise with CBT-style software or apps that mirror the real interface — selecting options, flagging questions to return to, and moving between subjects. By the time you sit the real thing, none of it should feel new.
Have a time strategy
You have a fixed time for all your questions, so pace matters. A simple approach that works for many students:
- Move through the paper once, answering everything you find easy.
- Flag harder questions and skip them rather than getting stuck.
- Return to the flagged ones with your remaining time.
This way you bank every easy mark first instead of running out of time on question 12.
Don't leave blanks
JAMB does not penalise wrong answers beyond the lost mark, so never leave a question unanswered. If time is running out, make a sensible guess on anything remaining — a guess has a chance; a blank has none.
Manage the nerves
Arrive early, bring your slip and required ID, and breathe. A few slow breaths before you start genuinely steadies your thinking. If one question rattles you, flag it and move on — momentum matters more than any single item.
Rehearse with someone
Sitting timed mock papers with a tutor who then walks through your mistakes is one of the fastest ways to improve. Browse exam-prep chums and book a free meet & greet to find someone who'll run mock CBTs with you. Prepare the format as seriously as the content, and exam day stops being scary.
