Block-based tools like Scratch are a wonderful first step into coding — but they're a step, not the destination. Many children eventually outgrow blocks and are ready for a real text-based language like Python. Here's how that journey works and how to know when it's time.
Why blocks come first
Block coding lets children build real programs by snapping pieces together, with no worries about typing or spelling mistakes. Crucially, it teaches genuine programming concepts — loops, conditions, events, and variables — in a forgiving, playful way. A child who's comfortable with these ideas in blocks already understands a lot of programming; they just haven't typed it yet.
Signs a child is ready for text
You don't have to rush the move, but watch for the signals: your child finds block projects too easy, wants to build things blocks can't do, is reading and typing comfortably, and shows curiosity about "real" code. Those are green lights. Readiness is about confidence and interest, not a fixed age.
Making the jump gentle
Python is an ideal next language because it's clean and readable. Ease the transition by rebuilding something familiar — a simple game or quiz the child already made in blocks — so the concepts are known and only the typing is new. Expect early typing mistakes and treat them as normal; learning to spot and fix small errors is part of the skill.
Keep it project-led
Just as with blocks, the magic is in building. Let your child make small Python projects they care about rather than grinding through abstract exercises. Motivation carries them through the harder, fiddlier moments of text-based code.
