Data analysis has become one of the most valuable skills across industries — and it's very learnable, whatever your background. If you're in Nigeria and want to break into it, here's a practical path that builds real, employable skill.
Start with spreadsheets
Before any fancy tools, get genuinely good with spreadsheets. Excel or Google Sheets can do an enormous amount of real analysis — sorting, filtering, formulas, pivot tables, and charts. Mastering spreadsheets builds the core habits of working with data and is itself a skill employers value. Don't skip this to chase trendier tools.
Understand the thinking, not just the tools
Data analysis isn't really about software — it's about asking good questions and finding honest answers in numbers. Learn to clean messy data, spot patterns, and tell a clear story with what you find. These thinking skills matter far more than any particular program, and they transfer everywhere.
Learn a tool or two well
Once your foundations are solid, grow into more powerful tools — SQL for working with databases, and a language like Python for larger or more complex analysis. Visualisation tools help you present findings clearly. Go deep on a couple rather than dabbling in many; depth is what makes you useful.
Build a portfolio with real questions
