How to improve your essay writing
Good essays come from clear thinking and structure, not big words. Here's how to plan, build strong paragraphs, write clearly, and edit your way to better marks.
Strong essay writing is one of the most useful skills you can build — for exams, for university, and for work. And it's far more learnable than people think, because good essays come from clear thinking and clear structure, not from impressive vocabulary.
Plan before you write
The biggest improvement most writers can make is to plan first. Before writing a word, jot down your main argument and the two or three points that support it. A few minutes of planning saves you from the rambling, directionless essays that lose marks. You can't write clearly about something you haven't thought through.
Structure every paragraph
A good essay has a clear shape: an introduction that states your position, body paragraphs that each develop one point, and a conclusion that ties it together. Within each paragraph, make your point, explain it, support it with an example or evidence, then link back to your argument. This structure does a lot of the persuasive work for you.
Write clearly, not impressively
Many students think long words and complicated sentences make writing better. Usually they make it worse. Clear, direct sentences that say exactly what you mean are far more effective — and far more impressive to a marker — than tangled attempts to sound clever. Write to be understood.
Edit ruthlessly
First drafts are never your best work, and that's normal. If you have time, read your essay back: cut what doesn't serve the argument, fix the grammar, and make sure each paragraph earns its place. In exams, even a quick read-through to catch errors lifts your mark.
