How to get better at maths (even if you 'hate' it)
Nobody is simply 'bad at maths' — it's a skill you build by practice. Here's how to close gaps, practise actively, and turn dread into quiet confidence.

"I'm just not a maths person" is one of the most common things students say — and one of the least true. Maths ability isn't something you're born with or without. It's a skill, and like any skill it grows with the right kind of practice.
Find where the gap really is
Struggling with a current topic almost always traces back to a gap in an earlier one. Trouble with algebra often means shaky arithmetic; trouble with calculus often means shaky algebra. Instead of pushing harder on the topic that's frustrating you, go back and find the missing foundation. Fixing that usually unlocks everything above it.
Practise actively, not passively
Watching someone solve a problem feels like learning, but it isn't — not on its own. Real learning happens when you do the problem with a blank page and no help. Always attempt before you check the solution. The struggle is the part that builds the skill.
Make mistakes your teacher
Every wrong answer is information. Keep a list of the mistakes you make repeatedly — a sign error here, a forgotten step there — and you'll see your weak spots clearly. Targeting those patterns is far more efficient than vaguely "doing more questions."
Slow down to speed up
A lot of maths errors are rushing errors. Reading the question fully, writing each step neatly, and checking your answer feels slow, but it prevents the careless mistakes that cost easy marks. Speed comes naturally once the method is secure.
Get a patient explanation
Sometimes a topic just needs explaining a different way, by someone who won't make you feel slow for asking twice. That's exactly what a good tutor offers.
